D&S TIPS & SNIPS SWIMWEAR TO FLATTER YOUR FIGURE Short Legs: Small Chest: No Curves: Chubby Tummy: Larger Bust: EYE-CATCHING PRINTS During this summer's hottest days (and nights) you will look ultra chic in bold floral or ethno prints. While in previous seasons wearing the bulk and bright patterns all over might have been dangerously close to kitsch, this style is feminine and sexy this summer. African, oriental, floral or geometrical forms all go, as long as they are fairly large, creating a sense of freedom and a nearing holiday. This style is better left for leisure time and parties, but prints in more subtle shades and softened by a plain belt in a darker colour can be worn to the office, too. If you'd like to match a print top or bottom with a plain garment for a more delicate effect, white or denim are probably the best choices. COFFEE MAKES PEOPLE MORE OPEN-MINDED Moderate amounts of caffeine can have an impact on the extent to which we can be persuaded, a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology revealed. University of Queensland researchers found that with caffeine consumption people are more likely to attend to, and agree with, persuasive arguments. The experiments involved asking people their attitudes about voluntary euthanasia before and after reading persuasive arguments against their initial beliefs. Prior to reading the arguments, the participants consumed orange juice with either caffeine or no caffeine. The level of "systematic processing of the message" was found to be increased by caffeine as shown by increased agreement with the arguments, greater message-related thinking and better argument recall. SUMMER 2006 COLOUR TRENDS White continues its trend as a base colour, either on its own or as an offset of the brights or pastel tones. Brights will be strong for high Summer casual wear, with tones of clashing turquoise, burnt orange and fuchsia. There will be cool, chalky neutrals mixed with the lightest of pastels just tinged with colour. Lavender and aqua tones will dominate the pastel colours with brighter pastels being toned down with indigo denim or white jeans. The current 'black is back' continues into summer. Darker tones will be a combination of earthy chocolate, brown and khaki tones worn in layers together. UNHAPPY HOMES MAKE WOMEN UGLIER Women who grew up in unhappy homes develop a less attractive appearance, UK scientists say. A research published by the Royal Society showed that women whose parents had separated or had a poor relationship look less feminine and healthy. Scientists assessed the features of 229 women, and found out that females with a harmonious family background were significantly more attractive. Results were linked to testosterone levels, but it was not absolutely clear whether the increased hormone was genetic or caused by stressful family life. Previous research has shown that girls whose parents split up are more likely to start their periods earlier, start having sex sooner and have a higher rate of teenage pregnancy, the BBC said. SUMMER 2006 MAKE-UP 1. Rocker Chick Look 2. Cherry Bomb Look 2. Desert Tan Look GOOD SPA GUIDE Suddenly spas are everywhere. In the past three years they have opened at a rate of 20 a week in the UK alone - from express high-street spas to luxury spas in five-star hotels. With such a choice it can be difficult to decide where to go. This Body&Soul Good Spa Guide should help, with tips from spa insiders about treatments and therapists plus a range of spas for any budget. BIKINI REVELS HALF-CENTENARY ON TOP The all-time fashionable bikini has seen remarkable 60-year anniversary. While leaving an uncovered area between its two parts, the bikini have added a completely new trend of fashion and beauty perceptions. Two-piece garments worn by women for athletic purposes have been observed on Greek urns and paintings, dated as early as 1400 BC. But the modern bikini was invented by engineer Louis Reard in Paris in 1946. The special type of swim-suit named after Bikini Atoll, the site of nuclear weapon tests in the Marshall Islands, on the reasoning that the burst of excitement it would cause would be like the atomic bomb. It took 15 years for the bikini to be accepted in the US. In 1951 bikinis were banned from the Miss World Contest. In 1957, however, Brigitte Bardot's bikini in "And God Created Woman" created a market for the swimwear in the US. SHOES FOR SPRING /SUMMER 2006 Definite shoes trends to note for 2006, include the platform sole shoe and the return of patent leather. At least one pair is advised as a staple of this season's wardrobe. Some platforms are comparatively gentle, whilst other are heavier and chunkier in appearance, more reminiscent of the styles of circa 1974/5. Get the 1950s couture debutante look by wearing either formal court shoes or round toed flat ballerina pumps with satin or brocade coats, skirts or dresses. Round toed ballet flat pumps often come in strong colours and have contrast trims. Many ballet pump styles are super flatties decorated in a similar way to the shimmering coral red and cream version above. For a little lift add a bit of extra height choose a pair with a more flattering tiny heel of 2 cm or more. This height will take you out of the dumpy doldrums, so if you are short, but want the round toed ballet look that is so good with full slouch skirts. SPRING 2006 FASHION TRENDS Get a head start on the new season with something white, something ruffly and something clean-cut. Retro and vintage looks have been swept away, and whatever feels fresh and airy holds sway. Designers keep looks simple, which explains the renaissance of the dress: in every shape from shift to - newest of all - strapless. Black dominated winter, so go white for spring. Forget about delicate heels and dainty soles: the hottest footwear trends feature a thick footbed (or platform) and/or wedge heels. From rope-wrapped espadrilles to sexy evening platforms, these shoes are the perfect balance for spring's romantic blouses and dresses. DELICATE AND ARTY SPRING 2006 Women's fashion is shaking off bright, intense colours and dramatic shapes this spring, for a more delicate and feminine look rich in artsy details. With white, pastel and earthy hues taking the front seat, femme fatale is stepping down to clear the way for femme cutesy. Subtler ways are used to make an impression. Natural fabrics dominate, together with loose and casual silhouettes. For an extra dose of romance, turn to floral prints and decoration with frills and rosettes in a subtle colour palette. Good news if you're in a mood for ethnic styles. Choose from long, full skirts, tunic tops, hand-crafted accessories. The espadrille soles will be quite hot, for both sandals and shoes. Pleated skirts are hitting the stage as well. |
